HINGHAM MUNICIPAL LIGHT PLANT
NOTICE OF COMMUNITY MEETING
PROPOSED SUBSTATION AT HINGHAM TRANSFER STATION
The Hingham Municipal Light Plant (“HMLP”) is proposing to construct and
operate a new transmission line and substation in Hingham to address critical
reliability needs and support the Town’s climate change initiatives.
On October 18, 2021 at 7 p.m., HMLP will host a Community Meeting via Zoom
where Hingham residents and businesses can learn more about HMLP’s plan to
construct and operate a new enclosed substation facility on an approximately
18,500 sq. ft. parcel located in the northeastern corner of DPW’s transfer station
property. HMLP selected the transfer station site for its new substation because
of its close proximity to the existing Hobart Street Substation, and because the
transfer station site offers HMLP an opportunity to minimize visual and other
impacts to the surrounding community.
The enclosed substation will be the connection point for a new 115 kilovolt line
from Weymouth which will provide essential back-up electricity to Hingham in the
event of disruption to the single transmission feed that currently serves all of
The October 18 Community Meeting – the first of two Community Meetings to be
held by HMLP – is an opportunity for residents and businesses to learn more
about the proposed substation project, and to ask questions and offer comments
regarding HMLP’s plans. The Community Meetings are part of HMLP’s overall plan
to submit a Warrant Article for the 2022 Hingham Town Meeting. The Warrant
Article will ask for approval to borrow funds to construct the project and for the
right to use the Town’s property for the substation.
Attendees can join the Community Meeting by entering the link,
from a computer, smartphone, or tablet. No prior software download is required.
If you have any questions regarding the upcoming meeting, please contact Tom
Morahan at email@example.com. HMLP looks forward to working with
Hingham residents and businesses as we move forward with this important and
necessary electricity infrastructure project.
