Road Construction Notice: Beginning September 20, 2021

The Town of Hingham Engineering Department will be repaving and/or reconstructing the entire length or sections of the following roads beginning September 20th, 2021, and continuing until complete.

  • Route 228
  • Short Street (School Street to Leavitt Street)
  • Leavitt Street (Short Street to East Street)
  • East Street (Leavitt Street to Weir River Bridge & Route 3A to Hull Street/MBTA crossing)

The work is anticipated to take ten (10) construction days over a three week period with an approximate completion date of October 8, 2021. All scheduling dates are dependent on weather conditions and subject to change. Please be sure to check our Town’s website for any updates to this schedule.

You will experience travel delays during this time and may not have vehicular access to/from your property while the work is in progress. On-street parking will not be permitted from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM during the days contractors are working in your neighborhood. Vehicles which interfere with this project will be removed. Personal and contractor vehicles should be kept off the roadway. We apologize for any inconvenience.

A detour will be in effect during construction. Please see the Town website for full detour details. Generally, when the detour is in effect, travel will be permitted Southbound along Route 228. Northbound traffic will turn left off of Route 228 onto Main Street, right on Water Street, right on Summer Street, and through the rotary to Chief Justice Cushing Hwy (Route 3A), with the detour ending at the intersection of Routes 3A and 228 (Chief Justice Cushing Hwy and East Street).

We request that you be mindful that the asphalt exceeds 300° F when placed. We will do our best to accommodate your access needs and maintain a safe route of travel throughout construction.

If you should have any questions, please call the Department of Public Works at 781 741-1430.
