Hingham Celebrates National Senior Center Month

Town Administrator Tom Mayo is pleased to announce that the Town of Hingham will be hosting several events in the coming weeks to celebrate National Senior Center Month.

Celebrated every year in September, National Senior Center Month is a time to spotlight senior centers, showing how vital they are to the health and well-being of a community. This year’s theme “Discover Yours” was chosen by the National Institute of Senior Centers to highlight how senior centers help older adults discover joy, talent, passion, value, hobbies, friends, health, education and more.

National Senior Center Month events are as follows: 

Unlaunched Voices, An Evening with Walt Whitman

  • WHEN: Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. 
  • WHERE: Hingham Center for Active Living, 224 Central St.
  • WHAT: Unlaunched Voices, An Evening with Walt Whitman is a one-man show, conceived and performed by Stephen Collins, and written and directed by Michael Keamy.
  • The show will lead the audience through Whitman’s life, a journey filled with humor, pathos and poetry.

Scam Awareness Presentation

  • WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 11:30 a.m.
  • WHERE: Hingham Center for Active Living, 224 Central St.
  • WHAT: Hingham Police Detective Sgt. Philip Emmott will discuss the signs of potential scams, current common scams, and how residents can protect themselves from being victimized.
  • Registration for this event is required. To register, call 781-741-1458.

Walkie Talkies With Joe

  • WHEN: Thursday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m.
  • WHERE: Webb Memorial Park, 317 River St. Weymouth, MA
  • WHAT: During this event, participants will have the opportunity to observe fall foliage and explore 1.1 miles throughout the peninsula while they learn about the Revolutionary War and the Cold War. 
  • Participants are recommended to dress warmly and bring their own water and walking sticks.

Live Music with Matt York

  • WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. 
  • WHERE: Hingham Center for Active Living, 224 Central St.
  • WHAT: New England musician/author Matt York will perform the songs of Johnny Cash and tell the stories about Cash’s career. 
  • In 2022, York was nominated for Best Country Artist, and his album “Gently” was just named one of the best albums of 2022 by the Patriot Ledger. Learn more about Matt York

Fall Flower Arranging 

  • WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. 
  • WHERE: Hingham Center for Active Living, 224 Central St.
  • WHAT: Residents are invited to join Ginny Ballou as she teaches participants how to arrange fall flowers in a vase they may take home. 
  • The cost is $5 and includes flowers and a vase. Participants are asked to bring their own scissors. 

In addition to these events, the Hingham Center for Active Living will host special events throughout September.

  • Every day in September that residents bring a guest to a program at the center, they will be entered into a raffle to win a $100 gift card to the Alma Nove restaurant. Guests will be entered to win a $50 gift card to the Fruit Center.
  • Fitness classes will be free during the week of Sept. 18. A new Flow Yoga class will also be available every Monday at 11 a.m. starting Sept. 18. 
  • Each Wednesday in September, complimentary coffee and bagels or pastries will be available for residents from 9-11 a.m., while supplies last.
