The 2020 Hingham 4th of July Parade Committee is delighted to announce the selection of Ms. Jeanne Murphy as grand marshal for the 2020 parade! The committee had several very qualified nominees to choose from this year, each of whom have served the town in many ways over a period of several years. The theme for this year’s parade is Unity in Community. It is clear that Jeanne exemplifies this message.
Jeanne Murphy has been a Hingham resident for over 62 years. She has enthusiastically engaged in a variety of civic, educational and community endeavors, which have greatly enhanced Hingham and improved the quality of life for its citizens.
Jeanne has been a board member of the Hingham Community Center since 1976, serving as its President from 2001-2005. During this time, she was actively involved in the fundraising that enabled the renovations to the bowling alley, dance studios, lobby and meeting rooms; allowing this focal point of downtown Hingham to better serve the needs of the residents. She also worked tirelessly in all aspects of the Community Center’s major yearly fundraiser, Cabaret.
Jeanne and her late husband, Peter Murphy, were founding members of the Friends of Saint Paul’s School. They worked with the Parish Council to provide free tuition, hot lunches and theater programs to the school.
As a member of the Hingham Capital Outlay & Management Committee, Jeanne oversaw the purchase and operation of the South Shore Country Club for the town. She is especially proud of her involvement of the transfer of the historic Hingham mural from the former Pages Restaurant to the Country Club in the early 80’s.
As the mother of six children, Jeanne was very involved in Hingham youth sports and served in leadership positions in: Hingham Youth Hockey, Pop Warner Football Cheerleading, Hingham Baseball, the Crow Point Yacht Club, Hingham Sports Partnership, and Lincoln Sailing Center.
During Hingham’s 350th celebration, Jeanne hosted residents from Hingham, England as well as participating in all the festivities. She has also been involved with the Hingham Historical Society, Red Cross, The Garden Club of Hingham, as well as being named the Queen Mother of the Hingham Chapter for the Red Hat Society.
One can clearly see Jeanne Murphy’s love and devotion to Hingham and its residents in her wide ranging involvement. She has always stepped up for the people of Hingham and provided quiet and effective leadership in all her endeavors.
The 2020 Hingham 4th of July Parade will happen virtually, as a collaboration with Harbor Media and the Parade Committee!
