CERT stands for the “Community Emergency Response Team" which is comprised of a group of volunteers who have received specialized training to assist the Town in large scale incidents or Emergency Management situations.  Here you can find resources and information about the Hingham CERT Program.  CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. All CERT members must be physically fit, have the ability to work with hand tools and fire extinguishers, be able to provide basic first aid, and work in stressful situations.

Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT volunteers are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects.

Hingham’s CERT Team currently consists of 17 members who have all completed the required training courses.  The Team meets regularly to stay informed on upcoming events and to stay current with the  needs of the Town.  At this time, the Team’s main function is to assist with staffing local/regional shelters which may be opened in response to natural or man-made disasters.  The Team also has the ability to staff warming/cooling centers. Other assignments have included crowd/traffic control at various events such as Christmas in the Square, and support of the Hingham Fire Department at the July 4th Road Race and Fireworks event.
