Hingham CERT Team


The CERT Team stands for  "The Community Emergency Response Team" which is comprised of a group of volunteers who have received specialized training to assist the Town in large scale incidents or Emergency Management situations.  Here you can find resources, training and information about the Hingham CERT Program. CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT volunteers are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects.

Upcoming CERT Training

In March, 2016 the town will begin a training class for the Hingham CERT Team. Members of the teams will not be considered 1st responders but will serve in support functions to the fire department, police department, and emergency management, during times of emergency and at special events that are held within the community. The training will also stress the importance of being safe in your home and assisting your neighbors. Many times during major emergencies or severe weather events, the public safety agencies are stressed to their limits and assistance from trained civilians can be of great benefit to the community.  

The first class will consist of 12-15 people at the Fire Headquarters at 339 Main Street. Classes will be held one night a week for eight weeks (3 hours a night) and one Saturday.  Attendance is mandatory at all classes.  Please do not get discouraged if you are not chosen for this training class. It does not mean that your ability to serve the town in a volunteer capacity is not wanted or will not be utilized. We will maintain a list of all willing volunteers and your name will be placed on the list as someone we could call if needed.

Membership Criteria

  • Physically fit enough to be able to perform light rescue work
  • work with hand tools
  • handle a fire extinguisher
  • provide basic first aid
  • work under stress
