[ARCHIVED] Town of Hingham Observance of Juneteenth Holiday

In observance of the upcoming Juneteenth Independence Day holiday, the Town of Hingham will be closing select municipal facilities later this week.  Town Hall, the Senior Center, and the DPW office will be closed on Friday, June 18 in observance of the holiday.  Hingham Public Library and the Transfer Station will be closed on Saturday, June 19.

Juneteenth Independence Day is a holiday observed annually on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. It was first celebrated in Texas, in honor of slaves who were emancipated on June 19, 1865 following the end of the Civil War.  In July 2020, Governor Baker signed Juneteenth into law as a state holiday in Massachusetts “to recognize the continued need to ensure racial freedom and equality."
