[ARCHIVED] Town of Hingham to Close Municipal Buildings in Observance of Juneteenth

Hingham Town Seal Black & White

The Town of Hingham would like to inform residents that Town Hall and other Town facilities will be closed in observance of Juneteenth.

In 2020, Gov. Charlie Baker signed into law June 19 as a state holiday. Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, recognizes and honors the day of June 19, 1865, when Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and shared the news of freedom with enslaved African-Americans. Last year President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday as well.

Locally, the following Town buildings will be closed in observance of Juneteenth:

Closed on Sunday, June 19th:

  • Transfer Station
  • Hingham Public Library

Closed on Monday, June 20th:

  • Town Hall
  • Senior Center
  • Hingham Public Library
  • Department of Public Works office
  • Department of Recreation – fitness room and programs
