[ARCHIVED] Hingham Reminds Residents of Extreme Weather Safety Tips as Heat Advisory is Extended

Weather Advisory July 22, 2022

HINGHAM — The Town of Hingham would like to remind residents to take safety precautions over the next several days as extreme weather conditions are expected to persist through the weekend.

The National Weather Service has extended the ongoing heat advisory from 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 24. Temperatures are currently forecast to be well into the 90s from today until Sunday.

The Town of Hingham recommends residents use caution this weekend and avoid strenuous outdoor activity whenever possible, and to look in on family members and neighbors -- in particular seniors -- to ensure they are staying safe during the dangerous weather conditions. Pets should also not be left outdoors for extended periods of time, and if left alone indoors should be left in an air conditioned space.

Local resources for Hingham residents include the following:

  • The Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant recommends residents minimize power use during this week, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., to reduce peak demand for electricity.
  • The Weir River Water System encourages residents to continue to conserve water, and to continue to follow watering restrictions that are in effect. This is particularly important to ensure water is available for the Hingham Fire Department should a fire occur.
  • Residents can seek relief from the heat at the following Town facilities:
    • Hingham Public Library, at 66 Leavitt Street. The library is open on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    • South Shore Country Club’s Bowling Alley, at 274 South Street, open Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The Town previously published a list of heat safety tips courtesy the American Red Cross and National Safety Council to help prevent illness and injury during the ongoing heat wave.
